Premarital Counseling: Building a Strong Foundation for a Lasting Marriage

You’ve found someone you love, someone you want to build a life with. That’s a big deal. But marriage isn’t just about the good days; it’s about learning how to stay connected when the waters get rough.

Premarital counseling gives you space to slow down, talk honestly, and make sure your relationship has the strength and flexibility to handle whatever life brings.  It’s not about finding problems but about getting ahead of them.

This is your chance to invest in your most important relationship and to strengthen your bond and prepare for the rapids ahead, so you can face them together with steadiness and grace.

Why Premarital Counseling Matters

Every couple brings their own story into marriage, different backgrounds, expectations, and ways of communicating.  When those stories come together, there will be moments of friction.  This doesn’t mean something’s wrong; it just means you’re learning how to grow as a team.

In our sessions, we’ll explore how you both give and receive love, how you handle conflict, and what it takes for each of you to feel seen and supported.  You’ll learn how to navigate the tough stuff like money, family, intimacy, and stress all while protecting the closeness that makes your relationship special.

You’ll walk away with a better understanding of each other, practical tools for healthy communication, and a shared confidence that you can handle whatever comes next, together.

How I Work

At Two Currents Counseling, I draw on Relational Life Therapy (RLT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Ecosystemic Structural Family Therapy (ESFT) to help couples communicate with honesty and compassion.  We’ll talk about the real things, the big dreams, the little frustrations, and everything in between, in a space where both of you feel safe, respected, and heard.

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about learning how to stay connected when life pulls you in different directions, to move with the currents instead of against them.

Common Topics We Explore

  • Communication and conflict styles

  • Family background and boundaries

  • Expectations around finances, household roles, and intimacy

  • Balancing independence and partnership

  • Faith, values, and shared meaning

  • Planning for transitions — from engagement to early marriage and beyond

When to Begin

Premarital counseling can start anytime — whether you’re newly engaged, planning your wedding, or just thinking seriously about your future together.

Think of this as a chance to strengthen what’s already good and learn how to protect it, long before the stresses of everyday life test your foundation.

Rates & Insurance

Premarital counseling is a private-pay service and is not covered by insurance.  Insurance companies only reimburse therapy that treats a diagnosable mental health condition for one identified client. Because premarital counseling focuses on relationship growth and preparation rather than treatment, it falls outside of those guidelines.

At Two Currents Counseling, my goal is to make this process feel both valuable and accessible.

  • $155 — 60-minute Couple Session

  • $185 — 90-minute Couple Session

Most couples schedule 4–6 sessions, though we can tailor the pace and number of meetings to fit your needs and schedule.

You’re not paying for treatment — you’re investing in the health and strength of your future marriage.  Each session gives you time to slow down, talk honestly, and build the skills that will carry you through the years ahead.

Payment is accepted by: cash, check, or all major credit cards.

Start Your Marriage with Intention

Love is easy to celebrate.  But building a life together, that’s a practice.  Premarital counseling gives you the space to practice that love with purpose, honesty, and care.

If you’re ready to start your marriage with connection, confidence, and intention, I’d love to help you build something that lasts.
