EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a research-based therapy developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro that helps people heal from distressing experiences, trauma, and the lingering effects of painful memories.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn’t require you to retell every detail of what happened. Instead, it helps the brain reprocess how those experiences are stored, so they no longer trigger the same emotional or physical reactions.
In simple terms, EMDR helps clients heal from the past so they can show up more fully in the present — calmer, clearer, and more connected.
How EMDR Works
When we experience trauma or overwhelming stress, the brain’s natural processing system can become “stuck.” Even years later, sights, sounds, or feelings can pull us back into old emotional states — as if the event is happening all over again.
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (often through eye movements or gentle tapping) to help the brain reprocess these memories safely. As this happens, painful experiences lose their intensity, allowing new insights and self-compassion to emerge.
What EMDR Can Help With
Traumatic events or post-traumatic stress (PTSD)
Anxiety, panic, and chronic worry
Grief and loss
Performance blocks and self-doubt
Negative self-beliefs that feel “stuck”
Emotional triggers in relationships
Why I Integrate EMDR
At Two Currents Counseling, I use EMDR to help clients release what still feels heavy — the experiences that keep resurfacing in subtle but powerful ways.
For some, that might be the emotional residue of childhood experiences or past relationships. For others, it’s the stress and burnout that build from years of trying to hold everything together.
EMDR helps quiet the body’s alarm system and reconnects you with your natural sense of safety, confidence, and clarity. It complements my work with Relational Life Therapy (RLT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) — creating a whole-person approach to healing both the inner and relational currents of life.
What EMDR Sessions Are Like
Each session is tailored to your pace and comfort level. We’ll start by identifying the memories, emotions, or beliefs that feel stuck, then use EMDR’s structured process to help your mind do what it was designed to do — heal.
You remain fully in control throughout. My role is to guide and support, helping you feel grounded and safe every step of the way.
A Path Toward Renewal
Healing doesn’t mean forgetting the past — it means finding freedom from it.Through EMDR, clients often discover not just relief, but a deeper sense of strength, peace, and purpose.
If you’re ready to let go of what’s been holding you back and live more fully in the present, EMDR can help you get there.
